"Alexa, Play My Song": Why Distribution Doesn't Have to Be a Mountain

I recently saw a conversation where an artist admitted they were overwhelmed by distribution to the point of paralysis. DistroKid? CD Baby? LANDR? Should I read every word of the Terms of Service?

If you’ve just finished a project and you’re feeling that "distribution dread," let’s simplify the landscape. You’ve done the hard work of making the music—don't let a "Submit" button stop you.

1. The "Middleman" Reality

You can’t upload directly to Spotify or Apple Music. You need a Distributor. Think of them as the digital truck that delivers your files to every "store" in the world simultaneously.

2. Choosing Your "Truck" (The Big Three)

Based on what’s working for my clients right now, here is the breakdown:

  • CD Baby: The "Legacy" Choice. If you aren't planning on releasing a song every single month, this is often the best move. You pay a one-time fee (about $10 per single), and the song stays on Spotify forever. No subscriptions, no "take down" threats if your credit card expires. For an artist who just wants their music in the world indefinitely, this is peace of mind.

  • DistroKid: The "Speed Demon." It’s a yearly subscription (around $23/year). It is incredibly fast and great if you are dropping 10+ songs a year.

    • The Catch: If you stop paying your yearly fee, they might take your music down unless you pay an extra "Leave a Legacy" fee.

  • LANDR: The "Workflow" Choice. Many artists are moving here because they don't threaten to remove your music if you stop subscribing, and it integrates well with the other creative tools they offer.

3. Don't Over-Engineer the Process

If your goal is just to have your music searchable on Spotify or playable on a smart speaker, stop overthinking it.

  • You don't need to be a music lawyer to get started.

  • You don't need to worry about "YouTube Content ID" right away.

  • Pick a platform, upload your high-quality WAV files (the ones I send you!), and hit "Go."

4. Making a Molehill Out of a Mountain

Is it a lot of info? Yes. But it’s a one-time setup. Once your artist profile is live, the "magic" happens. There is no feeling quite like seeing your own artwork pop up on a major streaming service for the first time.

My Advice to You

My job doesn't end when I send you the final master. I want to make sure your music actually reaches people's ears. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the upload process, just ask! I can help you prep your files so they meet every technical requirement for these platforms.

Are you ready to stop holding onto your music and start sharing it? Let’s get your project across the finish line.
