Transitioning a demo or home production into a release-ready track requires objective listening and technical evaluation. A track that sounds huge in a treated studio can easily fall flat, sound muddy, or translate poorly when broadcast on commercial FM radio, streaming platforms, or low-quality phone speakers.
Here is a 5-step technical checklist to evaluate whether your mix or master is commercially competitive and ready for distribution.
The 5-Step Radio-Ready Evaluation Checklist
1. Loudness Targets & Dynamic Range (LUFS)
While streaming platforms normalize audio levels (typically around -14 LUFS), commercial radio, EDM, and pop masters are often printed hotter to maintain energy.
Target Range: Aim for -8.0 to -11.0 Integrated LUFS for pop, rock, and modern electronic genres; -12.0 to -14.0 LUFS for acoustic, jazz, or classical styles.
Peak Ceiling: Ensure your true peak limiter is set to -0.5 to -1.0 dBTP (True Peak) to prevent inter-sample clipping during digital-to-analog conversion or lossy codec encoding (MP3/AAC).
2. Low-End & Mono Translation
Sub-bass frequencies (below 60 Hz) carry enormous energy that can swamp limiters if uncontrolled.
The Mono Test: Sum your mix to mono. If the kick drum, bassline, or main vocal drops significantly in volume or disappears, you have phase cancellation in the low-mids or stereo widening effects.
Harmonic Saturation: Add upper-harmonic saturation (around 150 Hz–300 Hz) to low-end instruments so basslines remain audible on small phone drivers or laptop speakers that cannot reproduce sub-frequencies.
3. High-Frequency Balance & Sibilance
Commercial masters need top-end "air" without introducing ear fatigue.
Sibilance Control: Check harsh vocal frequencies between 5 kHz and 8 kHz. Use a de-esser or dynamic EQ to control harsh "S" and "T" sounds before pushing final limiter gain.
The Tonal Balance Test: Compare your track against a high-quality commercial reference track using a spectrum analyzer. The frequency response should fall off smoothly from low to high without drastic spikes or hollow scoops in the 2 kHz–4 kHz midrange.

3 Quick Tests to Perform Before Mastering
The Low-Volume Test: Turn your monitor speakers down until the track is barely audible. The lead vocal, snare drum, and main bass note should still be clearly distinguishable. If the vocal disappears, it needs 1–2 dB of gain or tighter compression.
The Car & Earbud Test: Listen to your master on consumer playback systems (car stereo, basic earbuds, phone speakers). Pay close attention to whether the low-end boomy frequencies rumble the car or if the high-hats sound harsh on cheap drivers.
Reference Track Matching: Import 2–3 professionally mixed reference tracks into your session. Level-match them to your song using an integrated LUFS meter, and toggle back and forth instantly to spot differences in brightness, low-end punch, and vocal presence.
