When building a punchy mix, few tools are as crucial as a ultra-fast Field Effect Transistor (FET) compressor. For decades, the Universal Audio 1176 has been the gold standard for snatching transient spikes, adding analog grit, and bringing vocals and drums to the front of a mix.

In the late 1990s, Andrew Roberts of Purple Audio set out to recreate the iconic Revision E 1176 circuitry. The result was the MC76 (and later, the updated MC77).

While staying true to the discrete transistor audio path, single-element Class-A output stage, and ultra-fast attack times (20 to 800 microseconds) of the classic 1176, the MC77 upgraded the internal components with modern, high-precision conductive plastic potentiometers, improved stereo linking, and a dedicated sidechain insert.

While vintage 1176 units tend to smooth out the top end with a warm, slightly dark roll-off, the MC77 offers extended high-frequency clarity. Snare drums retain their top-end snap, and pop vocal tracks maintain their air without becoming overly sibilant.
