Released Friday, 26 June 2026. Rolling The Dice is a deeply reflective
collection of songs entirely written, recorded, produced and mixed by Sonny
Southon in her own home studio.
1. What is the biggest struggle you face when making music?
Time. Carving out time to focus solely on my music. There are always things that pull me away from the studio - family, friends, life's chores - and prioritising studio time can make me feel guilty. I would spend all my time in the studio if I could. Creating the time to spend 24/7 in the studio is when I am happy. Also, making sure long studio nights are balanced with wellbeing options.
2. What is the biggest misconception people have about making music and the music business?
What worked last year possibly is not relevant this year. The music business is changing constantly. It is good to keep up to speed on how the industry is adapting to audience migrations, AI and new trends for marketing music. Also, you need to absolutely love making your music, to flow with the ups and downs of this industry.
3. What is your absolute best trick to break writer's block or get yourself out of a creative rut?
Recording something every day - it can be a piece of music, a snippet of a song idea, practising an engineering technique - with no goal in mind, just free flowing. If I am going to write for a project - I will also get the flow going by playing/practising my instruments. Usually during this time, songs land.
4. What is your best advice or thoughts on promoting and marketing your music independently?
Your music is your product and like all business' you have to sell your product. Finding your audience and letting them know about your music is key. It can be hard for the musician to do both. If you are not good or don't want to do the promotion/marketing side of the music business then outsource to someone who will happily do it while you keep creating.
5 Who are some indie artists inspiring you right now that everyone needs to check out?
I listen to a broad range of music - not necessarily specific artists. I like to listen to top 50 charts - ie steaming, viral, pop, etc. I also listen a lot to chill ambient music and old classics. I love a good vocalists and listening for production ideas.
